For my architecture paper, I chose to write on the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, Spain which was designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. I focused on the interesting features of Antoni Gaudi's architectural masterpiece and how it fits, mainly how it does not fit, into the surroundings of Barcelona. The Sagrada Familia made for an interesting paper because it is not simply Gothic, as compared to other archetypal Gothic churches, such as the Chartres Cathedral and the Notre Dame Cathedral both located in France. I explored how Gaudi's Sagrada Familia redefines the meaning of typical Gothic architecture and strays away from some of its characteristic elements, such as the flying buttress. Finally, I added my own interpretation and personal sentiments towards the appearance, both interior and exterior, of Gaudi's magnificent, grandiose basilica.
Each of these pictures was taken by me on my visit to the Sagrada Familia Basilica this past March.
